BMUG is an educational non-profit corporation, promoting the exchange of information. We offer local activities for Macintosh enthusiasts in the Berkeley/S.F. Bay area and international services for users everywhere. Our meetings and Special Interest Groups are free and open to the public. For more current information, call the Announcement Line at 415-849-9114.
Our BMUG newsletter, published semi-annually is filled with news, reviews, tutorials, book excerpts, reference material, listings and contains no advertising — it is the reference guide for Macintosh users. Our Help Line and electronic bulletin board systems are invaluable services for technical assistance. Membership includes the current newsletter & membership disk, access to the Help Line, multi-line BBS, group discounts, and other useful products and services. Back issues of our publications are usually available. Our ever-expanding software library is constantly updated. BMUG is for everybody! We are here because we enjoy helping computer users be as productive as possible.
Software Library
We have one of the most up-to-date, comprehensive software libraries around with 200+ double-sided disks (400K available by request) filled with the latest versions of public domain, Shareware, and HyperCard stacks. We also offer a detailed index of our disk library, as well as subscriptions. Note that we sell disks for only the cost of materials and duplication — you still need to register any user supported programs you use on the disks. Our Registration Assistance Program helps you. Please see inside for more information. Bulletin Board System Our BBS offers the latest versions of files in our software library as well as s, private mail, rumors, etc. The BMUG BBS is part of the worldwide EchoMac Network on FIDOnet; by calling a local FIDOnet BBS in your area, you would then be able to get in touch with us wherever you are as well as send mail to users everywhere! With our multi-line capability you will now be able to have access to BMUG almost 24-hours a day. It’s easy to use, fun, and a great resource. See inside for more information. Meetings & SIGs We have weekly meetings of our Special Interest Groups at the BMUG office, covering a wide variety of topics, from beginning to advanced. See inside for more information. Helpline We can answer or find out the answer to virtually any microcomputer question- simple or advanced. Just call.
BMUG BBS
BMUG offers the modem-using member a large array of support services. Our Berkeley-based multi-line Bulletin Board System (BBS) can be your gateway to dataspace! We offer access to ongoing conversation on a variety of technical and non-technical topics, and, soon, the entire BMUG software library, for just the cost of your call. We are now running TBBS software on a Whole Earth PC-AT clone, so we can increase capacity more flexibly and economically. In addition, we have linked up with FIDONET, the international network of BBS systems, and are a member of the ECHOMAC (worldwide) and BAYMAC (Bay Area) Macintosh conferences, so that you can join in the conversation from any of over a hundred BBS systems around the world. Our BBS runs 22 hours a day (it exchanges mail with other systems from 1:30-3:30 AM PST), and supports 300,1200 and 2400 baud. The BBS is open to anyone, but only members can take full advantage of it. See How To Reach BMUG“on the right for the BBS phone #. Call on in! Meetings BMUG offers a variety of activities in the Berkeley area for Macintosh enthusiasts. All of our meetings are free and open to the public. On the right is a illustration of the meetings; call the Announcement Line (849-9114) for the topics that will be covered each week. Can‘t find a SIG (Special Interest Group) that seems to cover your area of interest? Call the office — we can help you set up your own group. Out-of-towners: Next time you are in town, drop by at 2150 Kittredge St, Suite 3B to say hi! The BMUG RAP Registration Assistance Program Most programs on BMUG disks are called user-supported software or Shareware, and sometimes even honorware. These differ from the free, public domain software on our disks in that the program’s author requests a payment if you use the program. The terms vary: some, like Red Ryder, request that you destroy all copies of the program if you do not pay within 45 days; others simply make a request for a contribution to support further development, or update versions of a file; and other payment requests are simple donations, or contributions to a charitable organization. The developer is able to offer the software at a very low price, because he or she does not spend money on advertising, distribution, and dealer markups. For User-Supported software to work, both as individual products and as a viable method of distribution in this industry, users need to comply with the terms of the license agreements and pay for the software they use. Our experience has been that, for many, it hardly seems worth the effort to write a check for $5 or $15 for a product, find the author’s address, a stamp, and an envelope, and send off the payment. This type of APATHY appears to be universal among even active ShareWare users, even those who would never dream of pirating a commercial program or stealing someone else’s food. BMUG is taking action to make paying for your ShareWare easier than ever. With the BMUG Registration Assistance Program (RAP), you can just send the checks to BMUG, with an order or independently, to register any program on any BMUG disk. We’ll pass on the checks to the author, and we pay the postage to send payments to the individual authors. This is an experimental program, and for it to work, you need to do the following:
1.For each program you want to register, consult the documentation (or, often, the “About...” box) for the author’s name, address, and suggested payment.
2. Make checks payable to the program’s author or company, NOT to BMUG!
3.Make sure your address is on the check.
4.Be sure that the program name and “BMUG RAP” is on the check, on the “Memo” line.
5.Send the checks to the BMUG office, Attn.: “BMUG RAP”, at our address. We’ll pass them on to the ShareWare authors. Do your part to help keep ShareWare alive — get the RAP — from BMUG.
More about BMUG
BMUG is financed by membership dues and sales of BMUG products. This State and Federal non-profit organization accepts no advertising in order to remain objective in its services and provide the computer user the widest possible array of information. BMUG depends on word of mouth, mailing, local advertising, and excellent contacts in the computer industry to publicize its events and services. We welcome, need, and are grateful for any contributions made to BMUG, financial or otherwise. If you think we could do better, please do let us know. Because we are growing fast, with more and more members seeking Mac help, we are always searching for volunteers who can help us for a few hours or few months at the office, the BBS, the Help-Lines, and on the BMUG newsletter. In exchange for your help, we can offer you an outstanding source of information, leading to ideas, and experience you can take with you everywhere. Remember, computer users are still in the minority, and, in this Information Era, people like you are invaluable! Call us!
